themselves against all kinds of natural disasters.  Even though hurricanes are rare in the Panhandle, Texans in this region face the threat of wildfires, tornadoes, flash floods and even man-made disasters.

On June 13, DSHS unveiled essential steps that can save lives while supporting families and businesses during catastrophes.  A new video series offers tips about preparing disaster emergency kits that include important documents, medical supplies, food and water.  The program suggests that people maintain emergency contacts and an evacuation plan, especially for seniors and people with disabilities.

The DSHS “Ready or Not” program will be offered to PILC consumers and guests during Doug Hammett’s Peer Support meeting at 1:00, August 17.  Information about preparing for emergencies will include a few tips for making basic preparations.  Information is also available at TexasPrepares.org.

DSHS Program Specialist and PILC Board member Susan Stokes also reminds people to remember their pets.  “They’re an important part of your family, so include them as you prepare your loved ones for emergencies.”
