Plans for Youth Summer Program Begin in Winter

The ninth edition of Youth Encountering Success has been in the planning stages since October when Youth Coordinator Cynthia Pacheco began assembling exciting events. Cynthia has also traveled to rural communities to visit students who are interested in attending the ten-week summer program. “We already have 17 students enrolled, and we hope to have at least 25 kids by May,” she said.
This year’s YES program begins June 7 and will feature activities to improve self empowerment and advocacy skills, and independent living skills such as meal planning and preparation, personal safety and healthy living. Assistant Executive Director Diane Campa said additional emphasis will be placed on money management and job readiness skills. “Planning for the future is what the YES program is all about; we’re simply preparing young people to become active members of society rather than whatever society hands them.”
Cynthia and Diane are presently accepting applications, especially from students in rural communities. YES participants have cross-disabilities and typically range in age from 13 to 21. Families, students and educators are encouraged to contact PILC for information at (806) 374-1400.
