Consumers Find Fitness Can Be Fun

Jessica Young promotes consumer wellness during classes that may sometimes go outdoors.

PILC consumers are building better health during classes that offer physical exercise, nutrition advice and a little fun, as well.

The monthly classes are developed by PILC Training Specialist Jessica Young who includes everyone in the activities.  “Regardless of a person’s disability, I try to involve them in some part of the class – there’s something that everyone can do.”  Jessica designs exercises that incorporate games or fun activities which she says “help them not think about  actual physical exercise.”

Exercises are followed by a snack, and consumers especially enjoy her related advice about nutrition.  Future classes will include lessons about preparing healthy foods as part of being physically fit.  She also plans to offer mental exercise games that are equally important to a person’s health and well-being.

Jessica’s physical fitness knowledge includes a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance.  She has worked at PILC for two years and is primarily involved in the Center’s Travel Training project.  She especially enjoys the opportunity to work with consumers during the exercise classes.

She hopes that more people will learn the value of regular exercise and proper diet.  “They can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and back and joint pain; but people can also enjoy better moods and less stress.”
