“Big Blue” Joins PILC’s Accessible Fleet

Taylor Wellborn of Renew Media Group applies new insignia to “Big Blue,” a lift-equipped bus donated by Amarillo City Transit
A 1999 International bus from Amarillo City Transit has found new life at Panhandle Independent Living Center.

PILC Development Director Joe Rogers successfully applied for the 12-passenger diesel bus that will continue the Center’s transportation services.  Independent living skills trips to remote sites will improve training opportunities. Unexpected or emergency transportation needs for consumers will also be filled, especially when city services are unavailable.  Since 2000, PILC has operated accessible vehicles to assist people with disabilities in reaching urgent destinations.

This latest gift from the city is in excellent condition and should provide many more years of service to the community.  Two other PILC vehicles help provide rides during PILC activities and, when possible, to community-wide destinations.  The Center is able to help with transportation given reasonable notification and when drivers are available.

The bus is the second such gift from the city which offers retired vehicles to non-profit agencies on a competitive basis.  PILC’s first used vehicle donated by the city was operated for eight years.  The Center is fortunate to receive another retired city vehicle that will continue to serve the Amarillo community for years to come.
